Fitness Market Trends

Revenues generated by devices such as body fat analyzers, heart rate monitors, and pedometers represent a growing consumer segment of the total fitness market. In an effort to improve fitness and general health, trends show that that Americans appear to be eager to purchase products that will measure and track their activity levels.

Right now, weight lifting is among the most popular sports in North America.
Since 1987, use of free weights has grown 128.6 %, use of weight training and resistance machines has grown 96.6 %, and use of home gym equipment has grown 137.1%.

According to a report titled "Trends in Free Weight Participation:"

  • Since 1990, female participation in free weight training is up 126%.
  • Participation in the 55+ age group is up 500%.
  • Free weights placed first among 21 exercise activities in 2001

According to the Annual IDEA Fitness Programs and Equipment Survey, group strength training, individual strength training and clinics on special topics were among the top 10 fitness activities in 2003.

According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE) the following are among some of the top 10 current fitness trends:

  • Time-starved Americans want "faster-quicker" and more efficient workouts
  • Fitness equipment will get smarter. Manufacturers will offer equipment that gives feedback and takes measurements of more and more things like body fat, heart rates, and lactic acid production.
  • Exercise, especially strength training, is becoming a larger part of preventive care for older adults to help fight osteoporosis.
